DSDN 104 - Sketches with 500 word explaination

Here are a couple of my sketches I’ve done so far. To start off, my aspect of pattern is the simplicity of a pattern and how a simple shape can create a complex shape.  In the first page on the top left corner, I was trying to nail the idea of how simplicity can create such an interesting shape. I started with ideas off my precedents using lines and waves. Then I came across of the idea of the triangle. Then I thought how I could make this simple shape turn into something more, something complex and that I couldn’t make by hand. So then I developed this in my sketches and have created some good ideas that I will carry on in 3DS Max. Like multiplying this triangle into four bits and then put them back together to create a diamond shape. Then I sketched out some stacking methods for these triangles/ diamond shapes and how I could align them together. I have also though of my 30X30X30 cube to fold out to create a bigger object and more complex shape.

In my second sketch page (top right corner), I explore more options of shapes and how they could fold out differently. These sketches represent simplicity very well having simple shapes and then growing them into complex forms. Like you can see with my diamond shaped development I have been working on. Putting diamonds inside diamonds and repeating the process to create more interesting shapes. Then I came up with an idea about creating forms from another complex form. So like for example a lot of stacked up diamonds that formed a box shape. This is handy to me because then it represents something very simple but then it has a complexity side to it.

In my third sketch page I have more in depth ideas with distorting a shape to create a form that is more complex than just straight lines. So like for example turning that diamond sketch into a curved diamond, making the middle of the diamond smaller at the same time. This got me wondering, what would happen if I stacked and multiplied these, then distort them even more. I would get something complex and effective; you can see these in my sketches of development. Another sketch I have done is the simple circle. Creating that circle and turning it into a sphere. Then you can open the sphere to have a complex pattern inside the sphere. I really like this sketch because it shows how something simple from the outside can be so complex in the inside.
